Heat pumps are usually the right answer here
In Brevard County a heat pump handles both jobs and does not need the strip-heat capacity a colder climate would demand. Most homes we work in run one, and most replacements stay with one.
What varies is the auxiliary heat sizing and the staging. Too much strip heat and you are paying for capacity you use three days a year; too little and the house is cold in a cold snap. It is worth getting right rather than copying the old setup.
What gets decided at install
Equipment sizing based on the actual heat loss and gain of your home, auxiliary heat staging, thermostat capability, and whether the existing ductwork can carry the airflow the new equipment needs.
On the island, the same coastal-corrosion considerations apply to heat pump condensers as to straight cooling equipment — it is the same outdoor unit sitting in the same salt air.
